How do I Get Information on Prescribed Burns?

Prescribed fire is one of the most versatile and cost-effective land management tools available. Over time, dead leaves, grasses, branches and other vegetation can build up across the landscape. This material, known as fuel, can alter natural habitats and contribute to more intense and dangerous wildfires.

Prescribed fire helps reduce these hazardous fuel buildups while providing important benefits to the land.

In Manatee County's preserves, prescribed fire can help:

  • Reduce hazardous vegetation and fuel buildup
  • Maintain healthy, fire-dependent ecosystems
  • Encourage the growth of native plants
  • Recycle nutrients back into the soil
  • Improve and maintain wildlife habitat
  • Help manage unwanted vegetation
  • Maintain open, diverse natural communities
  • Protect rare and sensitive plant and animal species
  • Reduce the risk and intensity of wildfires
